please help design my kitchen. or, i am very very bad at commitment.

we're in the middle of designing a home right now, and GUYS it's so much harder than i thought. this is the trouble you hit when you like too many different style aesthetics i guess.

anyway, i need help choosing specifically for our kitchen, and i've narrowed it down to three inspiration pictures:

DESIGN 1
black lower cabinets, white upper cabinets,
with a milky gray granite countertop:

obviously this picture is super chic, and my kitchen would be more of a budget version of this
(not made of money, people! ha!) i love that it looks elegant, but wonder if it's too much for a starter home.

----------------------------------------------------

DESIGN 2
doing more of a matte lower cabinet in a dark color like this gorgeous
slate blue with the white upper cabinets with a butcher block countertop.

i like the look of the wood countertops, but they're not as good of a choice for resale,
and the upkeep and sanitation i hear can be a little more high maintenance which is no bueno for moi.
----------------------------------------------------

DESIGN 3
all white lower and top cabinets,
with a white (or maybe very soft gray) countertop and white backsplash.

this may look like too much white, but it also looks like the perfect little starter home kitchen to me, and i love it so much. we don't need to be fancy, right? i worry about this being too dated of a kitchen when we want to sell. (gid also keeps reminding me that there would be little fingerprints all over my white kitchen if we chose this one...)
----------------------------------------------------
FLOORS:

OKAY. i've learned kitchen flooring is the devil, and it can be crazy expensive,
and i've never been more conflicted about anything in my life. these are my final choices for kitchen flooring (as of right now. i'll probably change my mind in 3 minutes).

1:
a decorative tile like one of these three

i also kind of like this one. am i nuts? ughhhhh

i thought an interesting tile would make our kitchen look so custom and cute, but i get worried that it would look too busy, and i'd get sick of it in a few weeks. 24 hours ago i had my mind made up that we were going to do the middle choice, and this morning when i looked at it, i felt like it looked so old and tired, and just like a bad idea all around. what do you think?

----------------------------------------------------

2: simple black tile.

simple. safe. and maybe a little boring.
----------------------------------------------------

3. wood floors

our home has the original hardwood throughout it, and it may be tricky, but i'm seriously considering trying to find reclaimed wood to blend into the kitchen. the cons of this would be that it's significantly more complicated, and part of me loves the idea of having an accent floor in the kitchen. wood floors go with all three of the designs i love though, so that's a crazy high pro, right?

----------------------------------------------------
i want to take a second to admit that i'm a basket case, and it's sooo silly for me to ask for advice through my blog. now that i've gotten past that, please help me.

comment! text me! send me facebook messages!! help!
or not. whatever. sigh.

happy monday. xo

  1. You seriously don't want while lowers. We've had those in the past and they always look grubby with kids. If you're going to do that, you'll want to buy magic erasers in bulk. In our home we have black and I LOVE it. We have black uppers too, but our kitchen gets LOADS of natural light. Without that I would go for the white uppers I think. Granite tops are best for resale and they look beautiful. If you do butcher block you'll have to seal it, and be proactive about keeping it sanitized. All. the. time. Cute ideas though!

  4. Don't do white lower cabinets bad idea with kids. You will go back and forth hating that your kitchen only looks clean for nap time and being frustrated every time teddy touches a cabinet, not worth it. In my opinion at least. I would do wood floors. I have tile now and when stuff falls on the floor. It you don't get to it right away it is harder to get off the grout. I'm all about easy cleaning so I use a stiffer to mop which is maybe part of my problem but if my swifter can't handle cleaning it I don't like it. Wood floors clean easier is I guess what I'm getting at. But seriously do what you want it's your house. My husband and I have stopped caring about resale value because we want the house to be how we want it not how some future owner might want it to be. Make where you live how you want it and what will make you happy

    1. ughhhhhhhh rachel i love the wood floors too, and just when i decided i was doing them, my contractor told me he didn't think we could realistically put them in the kitchen because of the way the foundation is in there or something. we'll have to go a different way i guess. i'm glad you liked all the options! :) xo

  10. I love that second kitchen with the lighter dark cabinets, but with the counter from the first one and the second tiled floor. I'm dying for a kitchen makeover (ours is literally falling apart hah). I just wish our kitchen wasn't so dark so that I could pull off the darker cabinets at the bottem, as I would love to do that with like a slate grey *heart eyes emjoi*

  11. We're doing our kitchen too right now so I know there are SO MANY DECISIONS. Haha. Ahhh the wood floors, I would so do that if I could!! All three options are really beautiful, personally I like number #3 the most. Just because I like white and how you can make it more alive with colorful details instead!
